Classic Windsor Style With A Bit Of Funky

These stools were designed for a lovely couple in Amherst, MA. They own a lovely old house that they have beautifully restored. A centerpiece of the house is the kitchen. It blends well into the house, with exposed beams and a reclaimed wood floor. We decided to go with a milk paint finish to give character to the stools, play off the colors of the kitchen and not clash with the reclaimed floor. We started with a classic windsor form and got a little funky with the stretchers to give them a modern touch. The joinery in these is the key that will see these a hundred or more years into the future.

The milk paint is a classic combination used in windsor style chairs. The top color is burnished heavily to let the color under it peak out to beautifully enhance the details of the chair. The bottom color a warm tan called french toast and the top a rich blue called sapphire blue. To further protect the color they are finished with a wiping varnish.
